Strategic Plan for Asthma in California (2008-12)
In May 2008, the California State Asthma Steering Committee released the California Department of Public Health’s new five-year Strategic Plan for Asthma in California—2008-2012. The new Plan provides both innovative and proven strategies to improve the health and quality of life of the over five million Californians affected by asthma.
The new Plan was developed through a detailed process that began in 2006 and involved collaboration and input from asthma experts, agency partners, and stakeholders throughout the state. Building on the substantial achievements made in addressing asthma under the previous 2002 Plan, recommendations in the new Plan are intended to mobilize individuals and organizations to collectively take clearly defined, comprehensive, and coordinated action over the next five years. The new Plan highlights five cross-cutting priorities for action: eliminating asthma disparities; providing education and awareness; focusing on asthma across the lifespan; creating institutional and systems change; and promoting effective asthma policies. These are addressed under five updated Plan goal areas: 1) Implementation, Monitoring and Evaluation; 2) Surveillance and Research; 3) Health Care; 4) Indoor Environments; and 5) Outdoor Environment.
The California State Asthma Steering Committee encourages individuals and organizations across our state to utilize the new Plan to identify objectives and strategies of greatest relevance in your community. The Plan may also be used as a framework for developing additional objectives and strategies in response to local needs and opportunities.
